J. Blake Johnson

Distinguished Professor of Art and Graphic Design at Saginaw Valley State University since 2007, with a rich background in both academia and industry. Previously served as Instructor of Record at the University of Idaho from 2003 to 2006, bringing professional expertise to design education.

Professor Johnson combines academic excellence with extensive industry experience, holding a BFA from The Art Center College of Design, an MFA from The University of Idaho, and an Associate's degree from Brigham Young University – Idaho. His career spans over three decades of professional achievement in both corporate and independent design contexts.


His professional portfolio includes collaborations with industry leaders such as Nike, Disney, Sony, NBC, Xbox, Microsoft, Adidas, and Columbia Sportswear. He has also contributed significant design solutions to healthcare institutions and educational establishments throughout the Pacific Northwest.


Since 1998, Professor Johnson has been at the forefront of web design and development, maintaining an active engagement with emerging technologies. His expertise in User Interface Design has been sought after by prominent technology firms, including Pillar Data Systems, Oracle Corporation, and RiskBand/Whereable Technologies, where he has served as a specialized consultant since 2006.


At SVSU, Professor Johnson delivers comprehensive instruction in Typography, Graphic Design History, Web Design, Portfolio Development, Graphic User Interface Design, and App Interface Design. His international experience includes serving as an Exchange Professor at Shikoku University in Tokushima, Japan (2013) and as a Visiting Professor at Shenyang Aerospace University in China (2016). In 2014, he established SVSU Cardinal Solutions, an innovative interdisciplinary community engagement initiative.

Cardinal Solutions represents an innovative interdisciplinary collaboration between faculty and students, providing comprehensive marketing solutions to local businesses and non-profits. As Director, I guide teams through strategic analysis of organizational objectives, leading to the development and implementation of effective marketing strategies. This initiative serves both our community partners and enriches our students' practical experience.


Under my leadership, Cardinal Solutions has successfully served over 80 community organizations and distributed more than $100,000 in student scholarships, demonstrating our commitment to both educational excellence and community impact.


The program has achieved university-wide engagement, incorporating students from all five colleges at SVSU. Participating disciplines include Education, Graphic Design, Technical Writing, Art (Photography), Art (Illustration), Marketing, Management, Computer Science, and Health Science, fostering a truly collaborative learning environment.

DOW Visiting Scholar Artist Grant - AIGA Student Group Initiative

Secured funding to facilitate engagement between the SVSU AIGA Student Group and Brian Bird of Thinkwell Group, a leading global experience design firm based in Los Angeles. This grant supported professional development through public lectures, student workshops, and educational outreach to local high schools, covering venue and promotional resources.

Foundation Resource Grant - Mathematics Education Innovation

Led the initiative to develop, design, and publish an innovative mathematics workbook for 6th-grade students, integrating Common Core standards with Dr. Danilo Sirias' Problem Solving Maps methodology. This multidisciplinary project enhanced regional mathematics education while providing SVSU Cardinal Solutions students with hands-on experience in project management, leadership, collaboration, and creative problem-solving.
